Discurso do Rei George IV em 3 de Setembro de 1939 transmitido pela rádio BBC aquando da entrada do Reino Unido na segunda guerra mundial.

"Com a ajuda de Deus, venceremos."

 

In this grave hour, perhaps the most fateful in our history, I send to every household of my peoples, both at home and overseas, this message, spoken with the same depth of feeling for each one of you as if I were able to cross your threshold and speak to you myself.

For the second time in the lives of most of us we are at war.

Over and over again we have tried to find a peaceful way out of the differences between ourselves and those who are now our enemies. But it has been in vain. We have been forced into a conflict. For we are called, with our allies, to meet the challenge of a principle which, if it were to prevail, would be fatal to any civilized order in the world.

It is the principle which permits a state, in the selfish pursuit of power, to disregard its treaties and its solemn pledges; which sanctions the use of force, or threat of force, against the sovereignty and independence of other states.

Such a principle, stripped of all disguise, is surely the mere primitive doctrine that "might is right"; and if this principle were established throughout the world, the freedom of our own country and of the whole of the British Commonwealth of Nations would be in danger. But far more than this -- the peoples of the world would be kept in the bondage of fear, and all hopes of settled peace and of the security of justice and liberty among nations would be ended.

This is the ultimate issue which confronts us. For the sake of all that we ourselves hold dear, and of the world order and peace, it is unthinkable that we should refuse to meet the challenge.

It is to this high purpose that I now call my people at home and my peoples across the seas, who will make our cause their own. I ask them to stand calm and firm and united in this time of trial. The task will be hard. There may be dark days ahead, and war can no longer be confined to the battlefield. But we can only do the right as we see the right, and reverently commit our cause to God.

If one and all we keep resolutely faithful to it, ready for whatever service or sacrifice it may demand, then, with God's help, we shall prevail.

May He bless and keep us all.

Nesta hora tão grave, talvez a mais decisiva da nossa história, quero dirigir-me a cada família, tanto em território nacional como além-mar, com a mesma sinceridade e emoção como se pudesse entrar em vossa casa e falar-vos pessoalmente.

Pela segunda vez na vida da maioria de nós, estamos em guerra.

Repetidamente tentámos encontrar uma saída pacífica para as divergências entre nós e aqueles que agora são os nossos inimigos. Mas foi em vão. Fomos forçados a entrar em conflito. Porque somos chamados, juntamente com os nossos aliados, a enfrentar o desafio de um princípio que, se prevalecesse, seria fatal para qualquer ordem civilizada no mundo.

É o princípio que permite a um Estado, na busca egoísta do poder, ignorar os seus tratados e os compromissos solenes que assumiu; que legitima o uso da força, ou da ameaça de força, contra a soberania e independência de outros Estados.

Tal princípio, despido de qualquer disfarce, é, sem dúvida, a doutrina primitiva de que “a força faz o direito”; e, se esse princípio fosse estabelecido em todo o mundo, a liberdade do nosso próprio país e de toda a comunidade Britânica estaria em perigo. Mas mais do que isso — os povos do mundo viveriam aprisionados pelo medo, e todas as esperanças de uma paz duradoura e de justiça e liberdade entre as nações seriam destruídas.

É esta a questão suprema que enfrentamos. Pelo bem de tudo aquilo que nos é querido, e da ordem e da paz no mundo, é impensável recusarmo-nos a enfrentar este desafio.

É a este nobre propósito que agora convoco o meu povo em casa e os meus povos além-mar, que farão desta causa a sua. Peço-lhes que permaneçam calmos, firmes e unidos neste tempo de provação. A tarefa será difícil. Poderão vir dias sombrios, e a guerra já não se pode limitar ao campo de batalha. Mas só podemos fazer o que está certo segundo a nossa consciência, e entregar com reverência a nossa causa a Deus.

Se todos permanecermos resolutamente fiéis a esse compromisso, prontos para qualquer serviço ou sacrifício que nos seja exigido, então, com a ajuda de Deus, venceremos.

Que Ele nos abençoe e nos proteja a todos.
